This is the section where we're introduced to an older Newt Pulsifer, Shadwell and a bit of Madame Tracy.
What were your thoughts when you first read about these guys as well as do you look at them differently from this reread?

When I first saw Newt, Shadwell, and Tracy I was confused. That is all I can say. The first time I read through the book I sort of skimmed their parts (because sometimes it's too loud in the house and I just sort of automatically look for important points.) However when I listened to the audio book, my oppinion actually stayed the same.
I always found Shadwell confusing. Even when I skim read it. The things he said made me raise an eyebrow and wonder if anything he had to say was true and would be referenced later.
Newt is always a cutie.

Shadwell has always kinda confused me as well, but not to terribly bad. I skimmed his part too when I was first reading because I was reading mostly at school. I regret it though, because I love Shadwell a lot, though he is sorta confusing. XD;
Newt is adorable indeed~ I also really like Madame Tracy, she reminds me of Mrs. Hudson. -shot-

Haha, I love how utterly confused it seems we all were at this part, because this was another "WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?" when I first read through this, too.
I never really liked Shadwell that much, but I do like Newt and Madame Tracy.

Shadwell weirded me out a bit because he has this odd mixture of extremely archaic and reprehensible worldview traits (set in his ways about burning witches and such, keeps spouting insults to Mme Tracy, grumpy old man et cetera), but at the same time the way he goes about it is pretty much harmless and you get the feeling that it's less out of genuine conviction and more to give him a Mission or something to do in life. Later on, he's visibly less eager to do harm to the Antichrist when he realises he's just a child... His heart's in the right place, but I'm honestly not sure what to think of him.
I do have to say - there was a line about how Shadwell 'never used to dream when [he] was a kid', and Newt having the feeling of toeing at the edge of some dark abyss, and mentally stepping back. I absolutely loved that. It was at once an acknowledgement and hit at some kind of Dark and Troubled Past that was done in a fresh and amusing way that didn't milk it for DRAHMA or make light of it.
I also think it's interesting that he's pretty much made up the entire 'web of highly skilled agents' both Az and Crowley try to draw on. What's interesting is that he's obviously done a very half-arsed job about it; the fact that they both seem unaware of what's going on speaks volumes about THEIR dedication to that part of their jobs. They've been keeping in touch with 'human agents' on the level of a formality only, really, content to go about their own business so long as minimal standards are maintained.
